What is a Catalytic Converter? II

And why is it so expensive? A catalytic converter is an essential part of your exhaust and emissions system. The purpose of the catalytic converter is to convert harmful pollutants into less harmful emissions before they ever leave your car's exhaust system. In chemistry, a catalyst is a substance that causes or accelerates a chemical reaction without being affected itself. The cost of a catalytic converter is driven primarily by the precious metals that are used to construct the catalyst. The mix of precious metals includes platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These precious metals are also the driving force behind "catalytic converter theft".
