5 Reasons Your Car Dies In The Winter

Have you ever tried to start your car on a frigid winter morning only to find it won’t turn over?! You’re definitely not alone! Cold weather can be harsh on your vehicle, and there are several common reasons why your car might struggle to start in winter. Let’s go over them!

  1. Battery Performance in the Cold
Car Batteries generate electricity through a chemical reaction, which slows down in cold temperatures. This can hinder your battery’s ability to provide sufficient power to start your Engine.
  2. Thickened Engine Oil
In chilly conditions, Engine Oil becomes thicker, making it more difficult for the Engine to crank. As a result, both your Starter and Battery have to exert extra effort to get your car running.
  3. Frozen Fuel Lines
Winter can lead to moisture accumulating in your Fuel Lines, which may freeze. Especially if your gas tank is low. When fuel lines freeze, gasoline can’t reach your Engine, preventing your car from starting.
  4. Alternator Issues
The Alternator charges your Battery while driving, but if it malfunctions, your Battery may lack the power needed to start your vehicle in cold weather. Winter adds extra strain on electrical systems such as Headlights, Heaters, and Defrosters, exacerbating the issue.
  5. Frozen Components
Severe cold can cause various parts of your car, like the Starter Motor or Fuel Pump, to freeze. If these components are inoperative, your car won’t start.

If your vehicle struggles in the winter, consider these quick solutions:

  • Inspect the Battery:
    • Check for corrosion on the terminals and clean them if necessary.
  • Jumpstart the Vehicle:
    • Use jumper cables or a portable jump starter to get your car running.
  • Warm It Up:
    • If possible, move your car to a warmer location, such as a garage, or use a block heater to warm the engine.
