5 Things Every Honda Owner Should Do to Keep Their Car Running Past 200,000 Miles

Honda has built a reputation for reliability, and it’s not uncommon to see an older Accord, Civic, or CR-V still running strong with 200,000 miles or more on the odometer. But those high-mileage milestones don’t happen by accident—they come from consistent care. Here are five simple but critical things every Honda owner can do to keep their car on the road for the long haul:

1. Stay Consistent with Oil Changes
This might sound obvious, but it’s the most important step you can take. Clean Oil keeps your Engine running smoothly and prevents costly damage. For most Honda models, follow the Maintenance minder or change the oil every 5,000–7,500 miles, depending on your driving habits. Skipping or delaying oil changes is the fastest way to cut your Honda’s life short.

2. Don’t Ignore Your Brakes and Suspension
Honda brakes are known to wear a little faster than some other makes, especially on heavier vehicles like the Pilot or Odyssey. Pay attention to squeaking, grinding, or vibrations. Suspension components like Struts and Bushings also wear over time, and replacing them not only makes the car feel new again but also prevents uneven Tire Wear.

3. Timing Belt or Timing Chain—Know the Difference!
Some Hondas have a Timing Belt (like many older Accords and Odysseys), while others use a Timing Chain. If your Honda has a belt, it needs to be replaced every 90,000–105,000 miles, or sooner if your Mechanic recommends it. Neglecting this service can lead to catastrophic Engine damage.

4. Keep Up with Transmission Fluid Services
Honda Transmissions are generally reliable, but they depend heavily on clean fluid. Fresh Transmission Fluid helps prevent slipping, hard shifts, and premature wear. Don’t wait until there’s a problem—ask one of our service advisors about the right interval for your model, usually every 30,000–60,000 miles.

5. Do the Simple DIY Checks
You don’t have to be a Mechanic to keep an eye on your car. Every month, take two minutes to check your Tire Pressure, look at Tread Depth, and top off Washer Fluid. Listen for unusual noises, watch for leaks under the car, and don’t ignore Dashboard Lights. Small things caught early can prevent big Repair bills.

Hondas are built to last, but even the best cars need care. Think of Maintenance as an investment—every Oil Change, Fluid Service, or Inspection is money you’re putting toward another 50,000 miles of reliable driving. With a little consistency, your Honda can easily become one of those legendary 200,000+ mile success stories!
