Mid-Winter Vehicle Safety Tips: What to Watch for as Winter Continues

Even though the holidays are behind us, winter is far from over.

As we ride out the middle of winter, here’s what Bucks County & Southampton drivers should be paying attention to weather-wise to stay safe and avoid vehicle damage.

1. Black Ice on Morning and Evening Commutes

One of the biggest winter hazards we see this time of year is black ice. It forms when temperatures hover around freezing—especially on bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads.

What you can do:

  • Slow down, especially early morning and after sunset
  • Increase following distance
  • Avoid sudden braking or steering

2. Freeze-Thaw Cycles and Potholes

January weather often swings between freezing nights and slightly warmer days. This causes potholes to form rapidly.

Vehicle damage we commonly see:

  • Bent wheels
  • Tire sidewall damage
  • Suspension alignment issues

If your steering wheel feels off or your car pulls to one side after hitting a pothole, don’t ignore it.

3. Road Salt and Corrosion

Road salt helps keep roads safe but is rough on your vehicle, especially brakes, suspension components, and exhaust systems.

Mid-winter advice:

  • Wash your vehicle regularly, including the undercarriage
  • Listen for new brake noises
  • Address warning lights promptly

4. Reduced Visibility from Snow, Slush & Shorter Days

Dirty windshields, worn wipers, and weak defrosters are a common winter complaint we see in January.

Check now:

  • Wiper blade condition
  • Windshield washer fluid (use winter-grade)
  • Headlights and taillights

5. Emergency Preparedness Still Matters

Even short local trips can become stressful if the weather turns quickly.

Keep in your vehicle:

  • Ice scraper
  • Blanket
  • Flashlight
  • Phone charger
