Also known as a "steering gear" this is an integral component of the modern automobile steering system. The steering rack or "rack and pinion" is the mechanical connection from the drivers hands to the steering wheels of the vehicle. The "rack-and-pinion" is a gearset is enclosed in a metal tube. As the driver turn the steering wheel the pinion rotates to pushes the rack left or right. Each end of the rack protrudes from the tube connecting to a "tie rod". The steering rack unit uses hydraulic fluid for steering assist. A common failure of this item is fluid leaking from wear.
