Gone are the days of your local mechanic reaching under the hood, taking out a mechanical fuel pump with a few hand tools and giving you a bill for $100. With strict emission standards and increased performance standards the simple fuel pump has changed greatly. The majority of vehicles on the road will now have an electric fuel pump mounted inside of the gas tank. This pump has a high demand and is constantly running whenever the engine is. These pumps can cost as much as $500 – $1500 dollars! The next level of fuel control is “GDI” or “gasoline direct injection”. These fuel pumps are mounted on the engine and capable of making thousands of pounds of pressure. The GDI fuel system has even greater levels of control for increasing fuel economy.

Rubber products, in this case tires, degrade over time, this process is called dry rot. Oils and chemicals in the rubber compound evaporate and breakdown due to UV exposure. The tire rubber loses its flexibility and begins to crack at the surface. The structure becomes more and more brittle (imagine an old rubber band), leading to sidewall damage and eventual failure. The general rule of thumb is that a tire will last for roughly seven years. If you see signs of cracking have a professional evaluate your tires.

Trailer inspection is commonly overlooked until you come upon a “DOT inspection” or traffic stop. Unfortunately at that time fines and tickets are commonly assessed. The easiest rule of thumb for “PA trailer inspection” is any trailer over 3,000 lbs GVW or that has brakes will require “annual safety inspection” Whether you have a “boat trailer”, “landscape trailer”, “enclosed trailer” or a “utility trailer” having inspection completed will keep it operational, limit breakdowns, extend service life and keep you out of trouble with the local law enforcement.

1. Find a set of jumper cables! It’s a good idea to have jumper cables and keep them in the trunk.2. Place both vehicles in Park and shut off the engine in both cars. Engage both parking brakes as well.3. Attach one of the red clips to the positive terminal of your battery. marked in red with “+” or “pos”4. Attach the other red clip to the positive terminal of the other car. If you can not locate the battery there will be “jump start” connections under the hood5. Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the other battery. marked in black with “-” or “neg”6. Attach the last black clip to a chassis ground or the negative terminal of your battery.7. start the donor vehicle and allow it to run for 5-10 minutes Patience is key here, it takes time to charge the dead battery8. start your vehicle Do not shut off you vehicle until you get it to a repair shop to have the electrical system tested. 9. disconnect all cable avoiding contact between the red and black cables. 10. Don’t forget to shut the hood!!#howto #jumpstart #deadbattery

Brake pad wear and life is different for every driver and every car. Local stop and go driving is far more harsh on brake pad life as opposed to highway traveling. Some heavy commercial use vehicles may only get 20,000 miles whereas highway use vehicles may get upwards of 50,000 miles. A typical suburban driver in our area with a mix of local and distance driving will average approximately 30,000 miles on their brakes before service is required.

Tires range greatly is cost depending on the size, type and rating of the tire. Tires come in all shapes, sizes and prices. Standard economy cars and sedans are usually the cheapest to replace. If you drive a sporty car, truck or a large SUV, those prices can jump significantly higher.
Unfortunately, you can’t just install cheap sedan tires on a sports car, just as you can’t install passenger vehicles on a large pickup truck. Your best bet to determining exact cost is to contact a local auto mechanic with your exact tire size, along with the year make and model of your vehicle to get a price estimate. The right tire for your car will be selected based on your vehicle manufacturers specifications, your individual driving habits, vehicle use and your expected usage. Many times you can take advantage of a tire manufacturer “sale” or “rebate” to assist in the cost of “tire replacement”.
