How does a GDI engine operate?

The main difference between a standard fuel injection system and “Gasoline Direct Injection” (GDI) engine is the placement of the fuel injector. A GDI fuel injector is located to spray fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Due to this design the fuel system operates under extremely high pressure with precise timing. A standard fuel injector is located in the intake manifold and the fuel travels past the intake valve into the combustion chamber. This design difference requires more frequent air induction service for GDI engines.
