Here at Frank’s Servicenter we have seen an increase in forced induction engines come into our shop. We are happy to see small 4 cylinder engines that are getting more power and better fuel economy than their 20 year old full sized V8 engine counterparts. We are all caught up on modern vehicle models that now come equipped with chargers straight from the factory.
Anytime you have questions about how to be maintain or repair your super or turbocharged engine, give us a call. Some good advice regarding charged engines to keep you out of the shop longer between necessary service intervals. Charged engine drivers should use the recommended fuel grade by their manufacturers. Fuels with lower Octane grades can cause premature detonation which in turn will cause damage to your engine.
You might be surprised to find out that superchargers and turbochargers do not necessarily require maintenance but it still important to perform regular maintenance on your vehicle such as oil changes. Chargers do wear out like an other parts with time and it is important to have a general idea when you should repair or replace your charger to keep your vehicle running smoothly.
Feel free to drop by our shop, give us a call or conveniently schedule an appointment online for a day and time that works best for you!

Everyone has heard horror stories on the news about aging tires and safety blow outs, so how can YOU tell how old your tires are? The week and year of manufacture are stamped on the side wall of the tire. We can liken a aging tire to an aging rubber band, the elasticity breakdown and the rubber begins to crack. Tires do not have a specific “expiration” date, although 7 years is an industry breaking point. It is suggested to check the tires thoroughly throughout their lifespan.

In Pennsylvania the sticker on your front windshield indicates when you need to have your inspection completed. In this example of 6/17 the “PA inspection” needs to be completed by 6/31/17. You can have this completed as early as 4/1/17. There is a 90 day window prior to the expiration date that you can complete the “inspection”. There is NO grace period in PA. If you drive when your car has expired inspection you could be subject to a fine from the police.

Improperly inflated tires are nearly impossible to detect with your eye. To properly check tire pressure you must use a gauge. Leaks and temperature change are the most common reason for tire under inflation. Additionally all tires will lose pressure over time. Underinflated tires can’t maintain shape and become flatter than intended while in contact with the road. If a vehicle’s tires are underinflated by as little as 6 psi it can lead to tire failure. Additionally, tread life could be diminished by as much as 25%. Lower inflation pressure will allow the tire to deflect as it rolls. This movement will create internal heat, increase resistance and cause a reduction in fuel economy. The difference could be up to 5%. You will experience a significant loss of steering precision and cornering stability. While this minor amount of pressure doesn’t seem excessively low, remember, it usually represents about 20% of the tire’s recommended pressure.

Synthetic motor oil has many benefits over conventional motor oil. Synthetic motor oil resists breakdown and sludging much better than conventional. Synthetic oil can flow better cold and withstand more heat. With out doubt synthetic oils outperform conventional oils, although these benefits come at a cost. High quality synthetics can cost twice as much as conventional. Added benefits to offset this cost are the increased protection/performance, longer service intervals and less down time for your vehicle.
